Littorina irrorata - Marsh Periwinkle
The Marsh Periwinkle snail is a small salt marsh snail that feeds on cordgrass and other detritus. They are known to create their own "farmed fungus" for food by spreading their waste across chewed parts of the grasses and then allowing fungus to grow to then later feed upon. Marsh Periwinkles are prey to terrapin, and blue crabs.
These Mini Periwinkle Stud Earrings are made from the molding and casting of real found Marsh Periwinkle shell in recycled silver. My friend collected the original empty mollusk shell on Myrtle Beach, SC. I had the shell molded and then cast a replica in solid recycled sterling silver. Once the castings are created, I solder on sterling silver posts.
These earrings are only 3/8th" long and 1/4" wide and each post comes with a 7mm sterling silver ear nut back. I designed them to be mismatched so you see the opening of the snail shell on one earring, and the back of the shell on the other.
This design is currently available in solid sterling silver but other metals and finishes are always available, message me for custom options and a quote. All HKM Jewelry pieces are properly hallmarked for metal type and stamped for authenticity.
