nodipecten nodosus - Lion’s Paw Scallop
Nearly overfished in the 80s in Brazil, this species of scallop is sought after for food in many locations due to its wide range from Southern North America to the West Indies and Brazil. You can find this scallop in deep water caves, or within shipwrecks. Aquaculturists can now "farm" them similar to how oysters are grown in mesh bags. The Lion's Paw is the birth shell for July.
The Lion's Paw Scallop Shell Necklace is made from the molding and casting of a real found scallop shell in recycled silver. The original empty mollusk shell was given to me by a friend who found this rare shell in Florida.
Once the casting is made, I solder on jump rings and the piece is cleaned up and hand polished with care to be strung on an 18” or 20” sterling silver anchor chain.
The Small Scallop charm is only 1“ long including bail and 1/4" wide. The Large Scallop charm is 1-1/4” long and 3/4” wide.
This design is currently available in solid Polished sterling silver but other metals, chains and finishes are always available, message me for custom options and a quote. All HKM Jewelry pieces are properly hallmarked for metal type and stamped for authenticity.
