Argopecten irradians - Atlantic Bay Scallop
The Atlantic Bay Scallop can be found in near shore waters along grassy seabeds with high salinity. Bay scallops are known for their 18 electric blue eyes and can swim using type of jet propulsion to escape predation. It is native to the northern Atlantic from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. You can see the eyes in this video I took of a specimen I observed at Sedge Island Natural Research and Education Center!
The Mini Scallop with Pearl Necklace is made from the molding and casting of a real New Jersey Bay Scallop Shell in recycled silver. The center freshwater pearl is bright white with great luster. Did you know, all bivalves create pearls? Even some mollusks like sea snails and conchs create them too! The Scallop is the birth shell for November.
The whole teeny tiny pendant is about 1/2" long and 1/4" wide, including bail. It is strung on a 16", 18”, or 20” sterling silver cable chain of your choice. A Large size pendant is also available here!
This design is currently available in polished sterling silver with a natural freshwater pearl but other metals and finishes are always available, message me for custom options and a quote. All HKM Jewelry pieces are properly hallmarked for metal type and stamped for authenticity.
