monetaria - Cowrie Shell
The cowrie is a sea snail that can be found all over the world in temperate waters. They typically live 50 ft deep, along rocky reef beds. It feeds on sponges and ranges in size from 5mm to 19mm in length. The cowrie is one of the oldest shells used by humans in ceremony, trade, and adornment, it is still known in some cultures as the money shell. Other cultures use the cowrie to symbolize womanhood and fertility.
The Cowrie shell necklace is made from the molding and casting of a real, found cowrie seashell in recycled silver. This shell was found by my mother in Naples, Florida.
The charm is only 1" long and 1/2" wide and it is strung on a 16”, 18”, or 20” sterling silver cable chain of your choice.
This design is currently available in solid polished or oxidized sterling silver but other metals and finishes are always available, email me for custom options and a quote.
