sinistrofulgur perversum - Lightning Whelk
This marine species is native to the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and southeastern North America, from New Jersey south to Florida and the Gulf states. It opens on the left-hand side of its whorl and has a lower spire than its cousin the knobbed whelk. The indigenous people of North America ate the snail and used its shell for many different things like weapons, tools, vessels, and jewelry. The skeletal remains of an 8,000 year old woman found in Minnesota, wore a lightning whelk shell necklace. The lightning whelk is the state shell of Texas.
This little Lightning Whelk Necklace is made from the molding and casting of a real found seashell in recycled silver. Once the casting is created, I solder on jump rings and it is then strung on a 16”, 18” or 20” sterling silver cable chain of your choice.
The charm is 1" long and 1/4" wide including bail. A friend found the original shell in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
